Life insurance

What is policyholder?

Also known as: Policy owner

Definition

The policyholder is the person or entity that owns a life insurance contract and controls it, including the right to name beneficiaries, access cash value and cancel the policy.

How it works in Canada

The owner is not necessarily the insured or the payer. For business planning, ownership determines taxation, access to cash value and treatment on death, so it should be set before the policy is issued.

Example

A corporation can own a policy on a shareholder's life; the corporation is the policyholder and the shareholder is the insured.
