Definition
Educational information only. Last reviewed August 25, 2026.
How it works in Canada
The basic grant is available regardless of family income; an additional amount applies to lower-income families on the first portion of contributions. Unused grant room carries forward within limits, and grants must be repaid if the plan is collapsed without eligible educational use.
Example
A family that missed contributing for two years may be able to catch up part of the unused grant room in a later year, subject to the annual grant cap.
